Linguist and film critic Joy Charles Ekong has raised critical concerns over the declining quality of contemporary Nollywood productions, calling on film producers to halt rushed release schedules and re-evaluate their creative teams.

In a series of posts shared via her official Facebook page, Joy questioned the growing industry trend of pushing out content on a weekly basis, particularly across digital distribution channels such as YouTube. She argued that the relentless drive to satisfy weekly algorithms has compromised artistic standards, resulting in poorly executed projects that fail to resonate with audiences.

Reflecting on her recent viewing experiences, the Uyo-born writer advised filmmakers to take a deliberate step back and restructure their production pipelines rather than sacrificing craft for speed.

"A lot of Producers need to take a few steps back, take a break or go back to the drawing board," Joy stated. "Change their team because it's clearly not working. Hmmmm sad. What did I just watch?"

Expanding on the systemic pressure faced by digital content creators in the Nigerian movie industry, Joy warned that the race for weekly premieres is hurting the ecosystem and urged producers to focus on delivering high-value storytelling.

"Who said your channel must premiere a movie every week? Who started this thing sef," she questioned. "No pressure yourself o. Take your time and produce good movies abeg. We deserve the BEST."
