The U.S. Mission Nigeria has joined the tributes following the death of veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs, describing his career as one that crossed borders and generations.

In a tribute shared on its official social media account, the U.S. Mission Nigeria said it joined Nigerians and the global creative community in mourning the actor, who died on September 16, 2026, at the age of 84.

“From international cinema, including American productions, to becoming one of the defining voices of Nigerian film, his extraordinary talent crossed borders and generations,” the mission said.

The statement also highlighted Jacobs’ influence beyond his individual film roles, noting that his legacy lives on through the stories he told and the generations of artists he inspired.

Jacobs built a career that extended well beyond Nigeria. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he worked extensively in British theatre and television before appearing in international productions. His international film credits included The Dogs of War, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend and Roman Polanski’s Pirates.

His work also connected him to American cinema, including his appearance in the 1985 Disney production Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend, in which he played an African expedition leader.

After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became one of the most recognisable actors of the Nigerian film industry. His career spanned theatre, television and film, with his commanding screen presence and distinctive voice becoming familiar to audiences across generations.

He was also involved in building the industry beyond acting. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs co-founded the Lufodo Group, which includes Lufodo Productions, Lufodo Distribution and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

His contributions to the arts earned him several major honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2013 and an AMAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He was also conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

Jacobs’ death was announced by his family on September 16. His son, Olusoji Jacobs, shared a statement describing him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and asking bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy.

The U.S. Mission Nigeria’s tribute adds an international dimension to the widespread mourning for the actor, whose professional journey moved between Nigerian, British and international productions.

Olu Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942, and died on September 16, 2026, aged 84.
