GRACE (Age 20s)

MONOLOGUE
"Everyone thinks I am exaggerating when I say I want a love like my parents had.

I am not exaggerating.

I watched my father tease my mother every single morning like it was the first time he had ever seen her. That is not fantasy. I watched it.

So when people tell me to settle, to 'manage' what shows up, I laugh. Not because it is funny. Because it is ridiculous.

I know Lagos does not wait for anybody. I know love is not supposed to write itself the way it does in my head.

But I made a promise to a ten year old girl in a Christmas letter, and I intend to keep it.

I am not difficult. I am not impossible to please.

I just refuse to call something love when it is really just convenience wearing a nice suit."

JORDAN (Age 40)

MONOLOGUE
"People assume that because I run a room, I understand it.

They see the suits, the schedule, the way I never raise my voice, and they think that is confidence.

It is not. It is control. There is a difference.

Control is what is left after you decide that feeling things is inconvenient, that wanting someone is a variable you cannot afford in a life built on certainty.

I used to believe in the kind of love that does not ask permission. That just happens, inconveniently, in the middle of a Tuesday.

Somewhere along the way I traded that for spreadsheets and quarterly targets.

Lately, though, something keeps interrupting my meetings. Not loudly.

Just enough to remind me that I built all this control around a very large, very obvious silence."

HENRY Age 35
▾
MONOLOGUE
"Everybody loves Henry.

I am the guy who makes the room laugh, who remembers everybody's order, who shows up with extra plates because somebody, somewhere, is always about to have a bad day.

Nobody ever asks Henry how his day was.

I used to think that was fine. Somebody has to keep the mood light when everyone else is falling apart.

But lately I have been wondering, if I stopped being funny for five minutes, would anybody notice? Or would they just wait for the jokes to start again?

I am not bitter, I promise.

I just want, one day, for somebody to look past the jokes and actually see me.

There is a whole person standing behind all these punchlines, and he is getting a little tired of being invisible."

NANCY Age 20s
▾
MONOLOGUE
"I have watched my best friend get her heart handled carelessly more times than I can count, and every single time I am the one holding the pieces after, while she pretends she is fine.

I am done pretending with her.

People think I am harsh. I am not harsh. I am just done watching people waste her time.

If you are not serious, do not come near her. If you cannot love her the way her father loved her mother, keep walking, because I will find out, and I will say something.

Somebody has to guard the people we love. Somebody has to ask the uncomfortable questions before the wedding, not after the heartbreak.

That is me.

I am not the villain in anybody's story. I am just the friend who refuses to be quiet while somebody I love gets hurt again."

STELLA Age 32
▾
MONOLOGUE
"Everyone keeps congratulating me like I have already won something.

'Stella, you are so lucky.' 'He is such a catch.' 'Your mother must be so proud.'

Nobody has asked me what I want. Not once.

I flew halfway across the world because two families decided our lives fit together like puzzle pieces on a spreadsheet.

And maybe they do. Maybe this works out exactly the way everyone has already planned it in their heads.

But some nights I lie awake wondering what it would feel like to be chosen. Not arranged. Not assigned. Not offered like a business proposal. Actually chosen, by someone who looked at every other option and picked me anyway.

I smile. I say the right things. I unpack my suitcase like I am moving into somebody else's life.

Because maybe I am."

LUCY Age 30s
▾
MONOLOGUE
"Six years I have worked for this man, and I have never once been late with anything that mattered. Not once.

But nobody remembers the six hundred things you got right. They remember the one thing you got wrong.

My phone rings, and my stomach drops before I even see the name.

I reorganize his whole week in my head before I have had coffee. I have memorized his coffee order, his mother's birthday, which investors need flattering and which ones need facts.

What I have not memorized is my own life. When did I last eat a full meal sitting down? I do not know anymore.

I am not making excuses. I made a mistake.

But I need somebody, just once, to ask if I am okay before they ask why I failed."

SANDRA Age 20s
▾
MONOLOGUE
"They always give me the awkward jobs.

'Sandra, handle it.' 'Sandra, tell her.' 'Sandra, wake her up before the boss notices.'

Nobody asks if I want to be the one standing in the middle every single time.

I do it because somebody has to, and because underneath the panic, I actually care about these people, even the ones who fall asleep in meetings and blame the coffee.

But there is a version of me that exists outside 'handle it.' One with opinions and ambitions of her own, that does not just fix problems quietly and disappear back into the room.

One day I want somebody to notice me before something goes wrong. Not because I fixed it. Just because I was there the whole time, holding things together."
